JOSÉ-LUIS RODA MATEOS: BACK TO CLASSIC
From an uncertain start at 18 to a confident return years later, this model’s journey is one of growth and resilience. In this interview with José-Luis Roda Mateos, he shares key moments, lasting values, and bold dreams for the future.
What initially drew you to your current field, and how has your journey evolved since then?
I started at the age of 18 with an American agency but I admit that I was not prepared and did not know how to give the best of myself. 20 years later a proposal from an International Shooting brought me back to the international modeling market, more mature and knowing how to give the best of myself.
Can you share a pivotal experience that significantly influenced your career or personal growth?
Surround yourself with good profeåssional people who believe in you and show your full potential. Do not let yourself be influenced by stereotypes and know how to take advantage of advice.
What hidden talents or hobbies do you have that might surprise people?
I competed 15 years in rhythmic gymnastics and currently compete in synchronized swimming.
How do you stay creatively inspired and motivated in your work?
The ultimate inspiration is to know and recreate the great models of history, think about how they would do it and adapt it to your physical potential.
Is there a tradition or custom from your upbringing that still holds a special place in your life?
My maxim is to treat others as you would like to be treated yourself, and I apply that to every professional I work with. And never complain hahaha
What has been the most challenging project or situation in your career, and how did you navigate it?
My first international shooting after 20 years out of fashion, I was so scared... but it turned out great!
Who has been a major influence or mentor in your life, and what lessons have they imparted?
Bijou Phillips, Nick Scotti & Mariah Carey are my idols.
In your opinion, what are the essential qualities or skills needed to succeed in your industry?
Patience, there are many long waits hahaha. don’t be afraid to create fantasies together with designers and photographers. And don’t complain and be polite to every person you work with.
What piece of advice would you offer to someone aspiring to make a mark in your field?
Be nice to people, and the “NO” of today can be the “YES” of the future.
If you could collaborate with anyone, past or present, in your field, who would it be and why?
My dream would be to be able to collaborate with an emerging cosmetics brand, to show that there are no limits to be happy. And if I could collaborate for a brand my dream would be Miu Miu and Victoria’ Secrets And my ultimate dream would be to appear in Sports illustrated swimsuit edition, they have made an inclusive transition of 10.
Looking toward the future, what are your major goals or aspirations, both personally and professionally?
My goal would be to be able to move to Milan or New York to work there.
What are your thoughts on Milan as a hub for creativity and innovation, and how do you think it compares to other major cities in your field?
Milan is the center of European fashion, maximum creativity and elegance, working in Milan is a tough market but very satisfying, my dream is to be able to prove in the future that I fit in Milan and work more often here, I have had some very good contacts, but the best is yet to come.
