Filippa Nyström graces the cover of Milan Weekly with a story that blends grounded wisdom and fresh creative energy. From her Swedish roots to international runways, she brings a thoughtful approach to modeling, shaped by curiosity, confidence, and connection to nature. In this exclusive interview, she reflects on early inspirations, personal growth, and the evolving meaning of success.

What initially drew you to your current field, and how has your journey evolved since then?

When I was little, I loved reading my older sister’s fashion magazines and borrowing my mom’s makeup and clothes. I’d pose in front of the mirror pretending I was on a photo shoot. But as I got older, I never really considered modeling as a real career. I was scouted a few times on the street but stayed really focused on school—until one day I got scouted over Instagram and thought, “Why not?” From there, it just took off.

Can you share a pivotal experience that significantly influenced your career or personal growth?

Actually, my very first shoot. I remember thinking, Wait, this can be a job? I had so much wearing the different looks and seeing the creative process unfold. Time just flew. Of course, there’s a lot of hard work and preparation involved behind the scenes, but I still feel that same joy on set today that I felt during that first shoot.

How do you stay creatively inspired and motivated in your work?

Everything! My surroundings, people I meet, the energy of new cities, films, art, music—there’s inspiration everywhere if you stay curious. I also love flipping through vintage fashion editorials and street style photos from different decades.

Is there a tradition or custom from your upbringing that still holds a special place in your life?

I grew up in Sweden very close to nature, and so much of my childhood was spent outside—whether it was playing on the street I grew up on, walking in the woods with my family, or climbing trees with friends. It’s still the most grounding thing for me. No matter what city I’m working in, I always try to find a park or hiking trail and just go for a walk. Very simple, but very effective.

Who has been a major influence or mentor in your life, and what lessons have they imparted?

My mom. She’s always had such a positive energy and mindset, and it really rubbed off on me. She used to tell me, “Things always work out in the end, and if they haven’t yet—it’s not the end.” That little reminder has helped me stay calm through a lot of uncertain moments.

In your opinion, what are the essential qualities or skills needed to succeed in your industry?

Confidence. You have to believe in yourself and stay grounded no matter what life throws at you. Rejection is part of the job, so you have to stay level-headed and not let one “no” define your path.

What piece of advice would you offer to someone aspiring to make a mark in your field?

Just go for it. If something comes from it—amazing. If not—hopefully it was still a fun experience. And all it really takes is one yes. One yes from an agency or casting director, and everything can shift from there.

How do you find balance between your professional responsibilities and personal well-being?

By staying grounded. I journal, I move my body, I spend time with people who truly know me. And most importantly, I remind myself that modeling is something I do—it’s not who I am.

What are your thoughts on Milan as a hub for creativity and innovation, and how do you think it compares to other major cities in your field?

Milan is such a beautiful blend of classic, timeless style and modern trends. Even just walking down the street, you feel inspired. The architecture, the people, the museums—it has such a creative energy. Compared to other fashion cities, there’s something really special about how Milan honors its history while still pushing boundaries in design and fashion.

Aside from your professional work, what passions or interests do you pursue?

I’m really passionate about wellness and mental health. I love reading about mindfulness and psychology, and I’m always exploring new ways to take care of my inner world. I also love cooking simple meals, exploring new cities, and spending time in nature whenever I can.

What book, movie, or artistic work has significantly shaped your worldview or professional approach?

The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron really changed the way I think about creativity. It reminded me that being creative doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be honest. I also love Audrey Hepburn films—they’ve always inspired me, not just because of her elegance and style, but because of her warmth, depth, and the way she carried herself with such quiet strength. Movies like Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Roman Holiday are just timeless.

Looking toward the future, what are your major goals or aspirations, both personally and professionally?

Professionally, I’d love to work with brands that align with my values and tell meaningful stories through fashion. I’m also really drawn to the creative side of the industry—whether it’s creative direction, casting, or collaborating behind the scenes. Personally, my biggest goal is to build a life that feels good on the inside. I want to wake up excited, feel at peace in my own skin, and surround myself with people and work that bring me joy.
